Pope Francis Lenten message 2018

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Once again, the Pasch of the Lord draws near! In our preparation for Easter, God in his providence offers us each year the season of Lent as a “sacramental sign of our conversion”.[1] Lent summons us, and enables us, to come back to the Lord wholeheartedly and in every aspect of our life.

With this message, I would like again this year to help the entire Church experience this time of grace anew, with joy and in truth. I will take my cue from the words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew: “Because of the increase of iniquity, the love of many will grow cold” (24:12).

In the forty days of Lent, the Church offers us a time to prepare for the celebration of the essential Mystery of our faith, the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus as the Christ. Our Mission hopes to energize that preparation by helping us to experience the Easter Mystery: the maximum expression of God's boundless and unconditional Love for us. Against the background of the cross and Resurrection, we will consider the essential human need of love, the saving attention of God to that need, and the redemptive human response to God. A short film and images from classical artworks will supplement the comments of the Mission leader, as will times of silent meditation, moments of Q&A and sharing, and suggestions for further prayer.

Heavenly Father,
We pray that the scourge of abortion be lifted from our Land;
That those who promote it may be brought to a change of heart;

That all who have experienced an abortion may be consoled with the healing gift of love.
We ask this through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen
