Settlement agreement in class action lawsuit against the diocese

Longueuil, October 14, 2025

On October 10, the Honourable Donald Bisson of the Superior Court of Quebec approved the agreement in principle reached on October 25, 2024, between the plaintiffs and defendants in the class action lawsuit against the Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil.

From the outset of the legal proceedings in December 2019, the Diocese actively participated in settlement talks, both directly and through a Settlement Conference in Civil Cases presided over by the Honourable Judge Bernard Godbout, J. C. S. The agreement approved today immediately ends the litigation and allows the members of the group to be compensated as quickly as possible and definitively.

As compensation for the acts committed, a Settlement Fund in the amount of $6,480,000 will be established by the diocese to compensate all persons who were sexually abused by an ordained diocesan minister or a lay minister under the responsibility of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Saint-Jean-Longueuil between January 1, 1940, and the date of approval of the Settlement Agreement by the court.

We are aware that this sum of money can never erase all the suffering endured by the victims. However, we hope that this settlement will enable them to embark on a path to healing.
