Statement

ALLEGATIONS AGAINST FATHER JEAN ROUDY DENOIS PSJ

Father Jean-Roudy Denois, P S J, Vicar General of the diocese, is currently the subject of a complaint for acts committed in France between 2013 and 2014 that compromised the sexual integrity of an adult woman. He will be interviewed by the Gendarmerie Nationale in the coming weeks.

Bishop Claude Hamelin, said he was “deeply troubled by these allegations” and indicated that he wanted “the facts and circumstances of this complaint to be quickly established in order to clarify the situation and ensure that justice is done for all those involved in this case.”

In consideration of these allegations, the Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil is immediately taking the following actions:

• Father Denois is temporarily relieved of all his duties for the duration of the investigation process.
• Father Denois is a member of the Société des prêtres de Saint-Jacques: we asked the Société to ensure that the victim be assisted and accompanied in a manner that reflects the pastoral compassion expected in such circumstances.
• We also reminded the Société that in accordance with the legal principle of the presumption of innocence, Father Denois has the right to be heard, defended, and accompanied.
• Since the alleged events took place in France, Father Denois will remain at the disposal of the French civil and ecclesiastical authorities, on French soil, throughout the inquiry process.
• We are committed to supporting pastoral staff, individuals and Christian communities in the diocese who may be troubled by this situation.

For many years, our diocese has been committed to recognizing that psychological or sexual harassment, violence, and discrimination constitute risks to the integrity of the person and result in physical, psychological, spiritual, organizational, and social harm. We are committed to addressing these behaviours by applying a “zero tolerance” policy to such situations.

Until the ongoing investigations are concluded, neither the diocese nor any of its representatives will make any further comment on this situation.
